DIFOTI® (Digital Imaging Fiber-Optic Trans-Illumination), uses safe white light and takes advantage of recent advances in computer technology to bring dentistry into the twenty-first century.
DIFOTI® is the only dental diagnostic imaging instrument of its kind to be approved by the FDA for the detection of incipient, frank and recurrent tooth decay. It safely and instantly creates high-resolution digital images of occlusal, interproximal and smooth surfaces. It enables dentists to discover or confirm the presence of decay that cannot be seen radiographically, visually, or through use of an explorer.
Frequently old fillings leak saliva and bacteria. Decay occurs alongside a filling but the filling itself blocks the X-ray, preventing the film from capturing the image of decay. In addition, tooth decay which is the loss of the calcified matrix, does not show on X-rays until the tooth looses 60% of its calcification. A tooth could have decay that is only 40-50% decalcified, and where it has already reached the nerve and never be detected until the patient feels pain. DIFOTI® prevents the need for root canals.
