X-Rays (Digital)
X-rays are an important tool that provides the ability to examine the roots, jaws, and facial bones of the patient. X-rays aid in determining the degree of decay, periodontal disease, abscesses or any pathology, i.e., cysts or tumors, that may not be visible. Most new patients have a full set of X-rays taken and check-up X-rays are taken as needed.
Types of X-rays:
Bitewing – determines the presence of decay in between teeth. They are done every six months to two years depending on tooth decay activity.
Periapical – shows root structures, cysts, bone level or other pathology.
Panoramic – provides a broad view of entire structure of mouth on one film. It is used to determine if pathology is present, position of wisdom teeth, etc. It is not used to diagnose cavities or periodontal disease.
Digital (film-less) – uses one-tenth the radiation and provides sharper images than conventional X-rays. Images are viewed on a computer screen and may be manipulated to extract more information. Midtown Dental Services incorporates digital X-rays that are shown to be superior to regular X-rays in terms of diagnostic quality. These are the only X-rays used at Midtown Dental Services.
Full Mouth Series – gives a complete screening of the teeth and surrounding bone. These are done every three years in the absence of active periodontal disease. They consist of 4 Bitewing X-rays and 14 Periapical X-rays.
