Bonding
Adhesives are used between the tooth surface and bonding material called composite. The tooth is first chemically treated with a special dental acid, which causes microscopic porosites in the enamel. Then, the adhesives form a bond with the bonding material. These materials come in various colors and shades. They are highly polishable, very strong and most last quite a long time. Bonding is often used to restore chips; fill holes, spaces or discolorations; and, can sometimes be used in lieu of braces to correct smiles, or in lieu of crowns to preserve tooth Structure. Shells of porcelain, called laminates or lumineers®, can be bonded for greater durablility than composite. See veneers (laminates).
